New Fire Station In The Works For East Vacaville
By Ian Thompson | DAILY REPUBLIC | December 07, 2007 15:05
VACAVILLE - The city's east side will be a step closer to getting a new fire station if the City Council approves a deal Tuesday to buy land on the south side of Orange Drive east of Leisure Town Road.
The city wants to put a station there to provide better coverage of areas that include the growing Vaca Valley Business Park, the Solano Community College center and homes in North Village.
This is part of a 2003 fire department report that recommended moving a fire station on Eubanks Court west of its current location and building the new station.
The 1.5 acres the city wants to buy is owned by the Yarbrough Trust and is worth $622,643, according to a memo to the City Council from Economic Development Manager Michael Palumbo. The trust is donating, as a charitable contribution, $311,322 of that amount to the city.
The trust wants to take the rest of that price as credit against future city benefit district charges assessed against other trust properties in the area.
Just when the fire station would be built has not been determined yet, Palumbo wrote.
In other business, the council is being asked to uphold a Vacaville Planning Commission decision against allowing the owner of the Alamo Plaza Shopping Center to build a 78-foot-high tower there.
The tower is part of a proposal the center's owners put forward in November to redesign the shopping center and parking lot, and build a two-story, 24,000-square-foot office building.
Planning commissioners liked the idea of renovating the shopping center but didn't like the height of the proposed tower.
Commissioners also listened to concerns voiced by neighbors about being disturbed by delivery trucks arriving too early in the morning at the plaza and imposed restrictions on delivery hours.
The City Council meets at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Vacaville City Council chamber at 650 Merchant St.
