More than a third of all U.S. public biotechnology companies are based in Northern California, and they spend $4 billion on research each year, according to a report released today.
BayBio, a trade association of the life science industry, said the companies based in the region are valued at $150 billion and have more than 240 products on the market.

In addition, Northern California biotech companies have 200 potential products in the second and third of three phases of clinical trials, the report by San Francisco-based BayBio said.
'If Northern California is to sustain its leadership position and continue to grow in the life science industry, public policy must change at all levels,' said BayBio President Matt Gardner in a press release.
