Supes to downsize south county plan

As plans for the South County Government Center in Vallejo progresses, so are the estimated costs of the project.

After receiving a status report Tuesday, the Solano County Board of Supervisors will consider approving an updated schedule and revised budget estimate for the project, which includes several different construction facets.

'They've looked at shrinking it down a little bit because of increasing costs over the last year or two,' said Supervisor John Vasquez. 'It's probably costing us more, but we'll end up having a smaller building.'

The estimated project cost has climbed by $9.3 million, to total $52.4 million.

And, the size of the new Vallejo facility - the main component of the project that will house health and social services on the county's campus in that city - has been reduced to 65,000 square feet from 70,000 square feet.

This is due mainly to increases in prices of construction materials, according to County Architect Kanon Artiche.
