The Bay Area's biotechnology industry is considerably more productive than previously thought, according to a new report from BayBio.

The number of products on the market and in advanced clinical trials developed by Bay Area biotechs is more than 50 percent greater than reported a year ago, an increase BayBio credited to a broadening of data sources used in the research.

'The pipeline is incredibly fat and robust. It's incredibly promising,' said Matt Gardner, president of BayBio. 'It's not just promising in one area but it's promising across the board.'

The Bay Area biotechnology association is scheduled to release its full BayBio Impact 2007 report Dec. 5 at a breakfast meeting at the J. David Gladstone Institutes.

Last year, BayBio placed the total number of products on the market from Bay Area biotechnology companies at 240 and the number of product candidates in mid- to late-stage clinical trials at 200.
