Taking its name from the holiday classic, "It's A Wonderful Life," the new Bedford Falls development in Fairfield aims to give its future residents just that, say developers.

Construction continues on model homes for the new development which is being built by Richmond American Homes, one of the nations largest builders.

Located on Portland Drive off Cement Hill Road, the homes will range from 1,758 to 2,282 square feet. Each two-story, American Craftsman style home has three to four bedrooms and 2 1/2 bathrooms. Large porches round out the front of the homes that are highlighted with stone details.

Richmond American Homes plans to build 69 units and has pulled permits for 36 so far, according to the Fairfield planning department.

"With a primary focus on homes for first-time and first-time move-up home buyers, Richmond American offers more than 1,000 floor plans with the ability to personalize interiors according to the buyer's tastes," the company says on its Web site. "A 10-year structural warranty is included in each home purchase."

The builder already offers homes in the newer section of Green Valley. Its Green Valley Ranch offers two collections of homes - the Classics Collection, with homes at about 3,047 square feet, and the Estates Collection, with homes of approximately 4,000 square feet. A 2,000 square-foot home at the Green Valley Ranch starts at $689,990, according to the company's Web site. Fairfield planners said the company plans on building 132 units, some with in-law units and has pulled 120 permits so far.

Richmond American also plans to build a total of 348 new houses in the GoldRidge subdivision in the Cordelia Villages area. As of July 1, it had already obtained 286 permits for its Savanna development.

M.D.C. Holdings, Inc., has been building under the name Richmond American Homes for 33 years and already offers homes in Fairfield with plans for more development in Vacaville, according to the company's Web site. It is one of the largest homebuilders in America with its roots in Denver.

Richmond American officials did not return repeated calls. The company's Web site does not offer details of its plans in Vacaville, only that it plans to build homes in a development it calls Ashbourne Park.

Fortune Magazine honored Richmond American Homes as one of the country's "Most admired builders." M.D.C. Holdings, Inc., posted $187.3 million in net income for the six months ending June 30, 2005. The company employs nearly 3,600 employees nationwide.

The sales center for Bedford Falls is open 3-6 p.m. Fridays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
