Students hit a home run with perfect attendance

FAIRFIELD
- Students who had perfect attendance last year in the Fairfield-Suisun school district didn't necessarily get straight A's, but they're going straight to an A's game.

That's the reward under a program started by new superintendent A. Woodrow Carter.

All 846 Fairfield-Suisun students who didn't miss a class last year received two tickets in the mail to one of three A's games - against the Kansas City Royals Aug. 19, Aug. 20 or Aug. 21.

Carter said he built a relationship with the A's while serving in the Oakland School District before starting as the Fairfield superintendent July 1.

"I called Ken Pries (the A's vice president of communications and broadcasting) and told him I wanted to do something for the students with perfect records," Carter said. "They agreed to send us two tickets for every student."

Last week, district personnel stuffed envelopes with two tickets and an explanatory letter from Carter. Students began receiving them in the mail Thursday.

Carter said he plans to continue similar programs.

"Absolutely - we want to find ways to celebrate success and reward high achievement," he said.
