Pacific Gas & Electric Co. said it would offer a total of $400,000 in economic-development grants to local organizations and agencies throughout its territory.

The utility is accepting applications through August 17 for grants ranging from $2,500 to $10,000. Applicants can apply online at www.pge.com.

The program goal is to increase or retain jobs in the primary businesses that support the local economy, Helen Burt, senior vice president and chief customer officer for PG&E, said in a statement.

Last year PG&E awarded approximately $380,000 to 63 community-based organization and local government agencies.
